Picture this: You’re sipping on a refreshing G&T, watching a herd of elephant drink from a waterhole. But here’s the twist – you’re not perched in an open safari vehicle or observing them from a distance. Instead, you’re at eye level with these majestic mammals, less than 10m away, safety and comfortably out of sight. Situated just steps from our boma, the underground hide at Tuningi Safari Lodge offers a rare opportunity to view wildlife in its most authentic form. It’s an experience that transcends the boundaries between observer and observed, allowing guests to forge an intimate connection with nature.

But what truly sets this hide apart is its proximity to an active waterhole. Here elephants regularly lumber past the windows, often within an arm’s length. It’s a spectacle that will leave you breathless, offering a newfound appreciation for the sheer size of these gentle giants. Other wildlife like kudu, buffalo and impala are also known to wander down to the waterhole for a drink (especially in the drier months), but elephants are by far the most common visitors.

For the avid photographer, the underground hide is nothing short of a dream come true. With a wide-angle lens in hand, you have the opportunity to surreptitiously capture stunning images of wildlife in their natural habitat. This is also a great opportunity to experiment with low-angle photography, creating unique shots to show off on social media.
